Characterization of Growth and Metabolism of the Haloalkaliphile Natronomonas pharaonis
Natronomonas pharaonis is an archaeon adapted to two extreme conditions: high salt concentration and alkaline pH. It has become one of the model organisms for the study of extremophilic life. Here, we present a genome-scale, manually curated metabolic reconstruction for the microorganism. The reconstruction itself represents a knowledge base of the haloalkaliphile's metabolism and, as such, wou...
متن کاملMolecular modeling of the HAMP domain of sensory rhodopsin II transducer from Natronomonas pharaonis
The halobacterial transducer of sensory rhodopsin II (HtrII) is a photosignal transducer associated with phototaxis in extreme halophiles. The HAMP domain, a linker domain in HtrII, is considered to play an important role in transferring the signal from the membrane to the cytoplasmic region, although its structure in the complex remains undetermined. To establish the structural basis for under...
متن کاملFlexibility of the Cytoplasmic Domain of the Phototaxis Transducer II from Natronomonas pharaonis
Chemo- and phototaxis systems in bacteria and archaea serve as models for more complex signal transduction mechanisms in higher eukaryotes. Previous studies of the cytoplasmic fragment of the phototaxis transducer (pHtrII-cyt) from the halophilic archaeon Natronomonas pharaonis showed that it takes the shape of a monomeric or dimeric rod under low or high salt conditions, respectively. CD spect...
متن کاملSignaling and Adaptation Modulate the Dynamics of the Photosensoric Complex of Natronomonas pharaonis
Motile bacteria and archaea respond to chemical and physical stimuli seeking optimal conditions for survival. To this end transmembrane chemo- and photoreceptors organized in large arrays initiate signaling cascades and ultimately regulate the rotation of flagellar motors. To unravel the molecular mechanism of signaling in an archaeal phototaxis complex we performed coarse-grained molecular dyn...
متن کاملGenome of the Haloarchaeon Natronomonas moolapensis, a Neutrophilic Member of a Previously Haloalkaliphilic Genus
The genus Natronomonas contains two species, one haloalkaliphile (N. pharaonis) and one neutrophile (N. moolapensis). Here, we report the genome sequence of N. moolapensis strain 8.8.11. The overall genome properties are similar for the two species. Only the neutrophile contains bacteriorhodopsin and a membrane glycolipid.
